Tattoo (1981) Jersey Noir

A Neo Noir with a bit of a Hopperesque pallet, that's sort of a mash up of Transitional Noirs Something Wild, All The Sins Of Sodom, with a nod to Kill Bill, a dash of Shell Beach from Dark City, with a tattoo artist protagonist, who channels Mr. Rodger's "it's a wonderful day in the neighborhood" demeanor, who eventually breaks bad.

Directed by Bob Brooks. Written by Joyce Buñuel and based on a story by Bob Brooks. The Cinematography Arthur J. Ornitz with Tokyo sequences by Michael Seresin. Music by Barry De Vorzon.

The film stars Bruce Dern as tattooist Karl Kinsky, Maud Adams as fashion model Maddy,.

With Leonard Frey as Halsey, Rikke Borge as Sandra, John Getz as Buddy, Peter Iacangelo as Dubin, Alan Leach as Customer, Cynthia Nixon as Cindy, Trish Doolan as Cheryl, Anthony Mannino as George, Lex Monson as Dudley, Patricia Roe as Doris, Jane Hoffman as Teresa, Robert Burr as Ralph, John Snyder as Hawker, Kate McGregor-Stewart as Pregnant Wife.

Karl Kinsky is a tattoo artist in Hoboken just across the Hudson from Manhattan. He got into tattooing when he was in the military while serving in Japan. We get all this info from a short flashback (above) of Karl taking photos of the ornate full body tattoos of the Horimono pilgrims at the Shinto shrine Oyama Afurion, on Mount Oyama, between Mount Fuji and Tokyo.

We cut to present day Hoboken where Karl is carving out some phat lines on a showcase customer practicing his art, and shooting the shit with his various customers and two tenderfoot hookers aka wannabe customers.

Closing time. Karl chases everyone out and heads through the small arcade, adult bookstore and strip club section of Hoboken to the diner where he stops after work and where everybody knows his name. While eating his usual piece of  lemon meringue pie. He gets a call on the diner phone.

It's his sister. Bad news. Karl's father from whom he has been estranged for years has died in Ocean City, New Jersey. His sister who was temporarily taking care of their father asks him to come down for the viewing and funeral and to help her with getting his beachfront house ready for the real estate market. Since he lives in Jersey he can show the house to the potential buyers.

When Karl gets back to Hoboken he is approached in his shop by an agent for Halsey a well known fashion photographer. She wants to know if he'd be willing to put temporary tattoos on the models in his next shoot which has a nautical theme. Karl agrees, to do the job.

It all goes Noirsville when Karl's obsession with tattoos combines with his obsession to "mark" a fashion model Maddy.

Karl Kinsky: Have to understand something, Maddy. I've committed my life to you.

Bob Brooks serves up a Noir tale of increasing alienation and obsession. Bruce Dern's performance juxtaposes artistic reverence for his profession with his suppressed daddy issues all under a friendly Mr Rodgers veneer. Maud Adams as his victim really doesn't have a lot to do. Worth a watch for sure 7/10.
